The iconic diving watch most associated with the Seamaster name premiered in 1957. That 12 months, Omega took the gown watch and reworked it into knowledgeable diving watch generally known as the Seamaster 300. It boasted a rotatable diving bezel, luminous arms and indices, and improved water resistance, all options that also outline the present collection. The earliest models have been solely rated to 200 m – the greatest depth they could check for back in the 1950s. However, later tests revealed that these timepieces were truly water-proof against 300 m , as their name implies.
Today, all Seamasters have a depth ranking of at least 300 m apart from the Aqua Terra, which has a rating of 150 m . you will see this effect on multiple authentic early Seamaster 300 watches, because the crown allowed water to come in. It was later changed to a screw-in crown and will not be seen as a sign of a swapped movement. Back within the 1960s and during the manufacturing period of the Seamaster 300, big producers made 1000’s of watches a 12 months.

I did not convey my camera with me on my visit to see Ed the watchmaker, but right here is a photo of the caliber 471 movement inside my 34mm Omega Seamaster reference 2802, shot on my iPhone. In my meditative state, I started talking to classic watch aficionado and colleague, Brandon Frazin, HODINKEE’s classic supervisor.
